When we think of grooming, dogs with long or thick coats often come to mind. But short-haired dogs benefit from regular care too. Their coats may need less maintenance, but that does not mean brushing is unnecessary.
Not all short coats are the same
Coat length alone does not tell you how much grooming a dog needs. Even among short-haired dogs, there are different coat types.
A Labrador Retriever, for example, has a double coat, with a protective outer coat and an insulating undercoat. An American Staffordshire Terrier, on the other hand, typically has a short, smooth coat with little or no undercoat.
This difference helps determine how much a dog sheds and which grooming approach is most suitable.
Why do short-haired dogs shed?
A dog's hair goes through a natural growth cycle. Old hairs fall out and are replaced by new ones. How much hair a dog loses depends on factors such as breed, coat type and health.
Many dogs shed more in spring and autumn, mainly in response to changes in daylight hours. Dogs that spend much of their time indoors may also shed throughout the year.
So even a short coat can leave you with plenty of loose hair.
What does regular brushing do?
Brushing helps remove loose hair and surface dirt from the coat. It is also a good opportunity to check the skin for redness, flakes or small cuts.
Choosing the right brush matters. For a short, smooth coat, a soft brush or rubber grooming brush is often enough. Dogs with a dense undercoat may need different grooming tools to remove loose undercoat hair.
For many short-haired dogs, brushing once or twice a week is a good starting point. During shedding season, you may need to brush a little more often, as long as the skin does not become irritated. Brushing too hard or too frequently can do more harm than good.
Good grooming does not have to be complicated
A short-haired dog usually does not need an elaborate grooming routine. The right brush and a few minutes of attention can go a long way.
